GDC 2026: Majority of Devs Say AI Harmful

The GDC 2026 developer survey found that 52% of game developers now view generative AI as harmful to the industry — up from 30% in 2025 and 18% in 2024 — with only 7% calling it a net positive. The top concerns cited were unconsented training on artists' and writers' work, and the direct threat to creative livelihoods. What makes the number striking is the context it arrives in: the same conference had Tencent showcasing AI-generated 3D assets and other vendors demonstrating real-time LLM-powered NPC dialogue and neural voice synthesis live on the floor. The tools are being adopted in pipelines at the same time the people using them are voting majority-harmful in anonymous surveys. That gap — between what studios are implementing and what their developers actually believe — is the tension the industry has been unwilling to publicly address. The year-over-year trajectory suggests it's not resolving on its own.
