Xbox Update Cuts Console Standby Power 20X

▸ THE LEAD

Microsoft is quietly switching every Series X|S and Xbox One from Sleep to Shutdown mode by default.

Buried in Xbox's June 10 Insider update is a genuinely big change: Microsoft is transitioning Series X|S and Xbox One consoles from Sleep to Shutdown mode across the entire fleet, cutting standby power draw by up to 20X. Microsoft says updates and performance are unaffected, which is the part that took years of boot-time engineering to make true — Shutdown used to mean slow starts and missed overnight patches. Multiply a few watts of sleep-mode draw across an install base this size and the aggregate savings are plausibly among the larger ones a platform holder has shipped via a settings flag rather than a press conference. The update also adds poster-style custom artwork in My Games & Apps, mutual-friends discovery, and wishlisting straight from Game Cards. The artwork feature will get the screenshots, but the power change is the one that actually matters. It's also conveniently good math for a company about to report its gaming division's carbon footprint alongside 3% margins.
