COPA CITY Is a Football Sim Where You Never Coach

▸ THE LEAD

The new management game ignores the pitch entirely and makes you run the tournament around it.

COPA CITY launched on PC with a pitch that sounds almost backwards for a football game: you never coach the team. Instead of lineups and transfers, the sim hands you the logistics of staging a major tournament, the transport networks, fan zones, security, and the sprawling operation that keeps a competition running. It's less a football management game than a tournament-logistics tycoon sim, and that sidestep is genuinely fresh in a corner of gaming that mostly competes on how many real-world player licenses it can stuff into a database. Whether "SimCity for the World Cup" has legs beyond the novelty is the open question, but it's the most interesting idea in a release week otherwise built on Hell Let Loose: Vietnam and EA Sports UFC 6. For management-sim fans tired of yet another Football Manager clone, that alone makes it worth a look.
