GDC 2026: 52% of Devs Say AI Harms Industry

▸ THE LEAD

The GDC 2026 developer survey found a majority now believe generative AI is damaging the games industry, up from 30% last year.

The GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry survey puts a number on something the games industry has been circling for two years: 52% of developers now say generative AI is harming the industry, up from 30% in 2025 and 18% in 2024. That's not a gradual shift. It's an acceleration, and creative roles are leading it: 64% of visual and technical artists oppose it, 63% of game designers. The most telling data point isn't the opposition rate; it's the coercion rate. One developer's quote cuts straight through: "AI is theft. I have to use it, otherwise I'm going to get fired." That sentence explains why opposition numbers keep climbing while adoption rates also climb: developers who believe the tools are harmful are using them anyway because the alternative is unemployment. The numbers arrive alongside a Steam Next Fest disclosure rate of nearly 20%, which means the tools are now embedded deep enough in the pipeline that opposition has become a moral position rather than a practical one. Fifty-two percent opposed and the number still climbing year on year: the industry has arrived at a genuinely uncomfortable place, and no one has found a way out yet.
