One in Five Steam Next Fest Games Carries an AI Warning

SteamDB analysis of the June 2026 Steam Next Fest found that 1,704 of approximately 8,700 participating demos carry a generative AI content disclosure: about 19.5%, roughly one in five. Valve's 2024 policy requires developers to flag AI-generated content but carves out an "efficiency gains" exemption that critics argue lets undisclosed AI art slip through regardless. The number is striking because Next Fest has historically been indie-heavy and indie developers are precisely the segment with the strongest financial incentive to use AI tooling. Games like Crimson Desert and Arc Raiders already faced player backlash this year over AI art at launch, with Arc Raiders facing repeated criticism over its AI-generated assets. The 20% figure is a floor, not a count. Because Valve's efficiency-gains carve-out lets some AI work go undisclosed, the real share of AI-assisted demos almost certainly runs higher.
