AMD Backports FSR 4.1 to RDNA 3 GPUs This Summer

▸ THE LEAD

RDNA 2 — and the Steam Deck — get it in early 2027, with a 10–20% performance penalty for chips without FP8 hardware.

AMD's Jack Huynh committed FSR 4.1 to RDNA 3 GPUs in July 2026 and to RDNA 2 — including the Steam Deck — in early 2027, ending months of speculation that older Radeon cards were stuck on FSR 3.1 forever. The asterisk is steep: chips without FP8 accelerators fall back to INT8 paths and take a 10–20% performance hit versus the previous version, which is the opposite of what an upscaler is supposed to do. Over 300 games are slated for launch-day support, and Valve's handheld is the headline beneficiary if the quality math works out. The question for Steam Deck owners isn't whether FSR 4.1 lands — it's whether the image gains are worth losing frames on one of the most thermal-constrained PC gaming devices on the market.
